Language Arts
In Language Arts this year, the students will be looking at Greek and Latin Roots, grammar, writing, and reading in my classroom.
For the Greek and Latin Roots vocabulary, we will be doing one unit for about two weeks. The first three days will be spent going over the three different roots for that unit, one per day. There will be six days of homework, only about ten questions each night, one for each of our words. At the end of the two weeks, there will be a ten question test. We will be doing four of these units per quarter.
We will be going over the basics of grammar as we go through the year. I want to make sure the students know what is involved in writing a sentence (a subject and a predicate), paragraph (topic sentence, body, and concluding sentence), and multiple paragraph essay (not necessarily five paragraphs). Hopefully, they will remember much of this from earlier in their elementary career and it will go smoothly!
We are writing fictional narratives and personal narratives first quarter. We will be reviewing the Writing Process (plan, draft, revise, edit, and final copy) and the Six Traits of Writing (ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions). Right now, we are revising and editing their fictional narratives. As we finish, we will begin to write their personal narratives.
In reading we will be looking at both fiction and nonfiction. We are going to continue to get all of the students' Fountas and Pinnell reading levels together, so they will be reading and responding a lot in class this month! We have started reading Old Yeller by Fred Gipson and the students are really enjoying it. Today we were able to see Travis, the main character, encounter two bulls fighting on his property. This was his idea of excitement! How far we have come!! We are also reading a nonfiction "magazine" called Junior Scholastic. It consists of about 24 pages! We get a new one every two weeks and there is one per student, so your child will be able to bring it home at the end of the two weeks. In addition to all of this, we have also begun our Article of the Week. The students get an article on a Friday which they need to annotate by Tuesday. During "Talk About It Tuesday" we discuss the article and the annotations they found. They will then need to respond to their reading. They each have a blue paper in a sheet protector that will guide them through this response. We went over this last week and I will be looking at their responses this weekend to give them some feedback.
